Scrittore, saggista, studioso olandese di culture orientali, dal 2003 al 2017 ha insegnato Democrazia, Diritti Umani e Giornalismo al Bard College di New York, e oggi dirige «The New York Review of Books». Le sue riflessioni sui rapporti tra le culture, sulle tensioni e le trasformazioni indotte nei Paesi Bassi e in Europa dalle continue ondate migratorie, sul valore della tolleranza nella cultura liberale occidentale hanno suscitato grande interesse alimentando un vivace dibattito, in particolare dopo la pubblicazione di Murder in Amsterdam: the Death of Theo Van Gogh and the Limits of Tolerance (2006; trad. it. 2007). Tra le sue numerose pubblicazioni Occidentalism: the West in the Eyes of its Enemies (2004, con A. Margalit; trad. it. 2004); The China Lover (2008); Taming the Gods: Religion and Democracy on Three Continents (2010, trad. it. 2011); Year Zero: A History of 1945 (2013, trad. it. 2015); Theater of Cruelty.
