One of the world greatest experts in infectious diseases and immunology, he served as a consultant for every American President since 1989. Since 1984 he is the chair of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. In 2020 he became one of the most important faces of the fight against the SARS-CoV-2. In January 2021, President Joe Biden appointed him as Chief Medical Advisor. He lectured in many of the major American medical centers, and hosted conferences in some of the most notorious universities around the World; for the achievements gathered in his scientific career he was awarded with numerous prizes and honors, among which the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Ordine al merito della Repubblica Italiana. He is a member of the National Academy of Science, and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, of the National Academy of Medicine, of the American Philosophical Society, and the Royal Danish Science and Letters Academy.
