American artist and writer. He worked on his first book, The Houdini Box (1991), while working as a clerk in a kids bookstore in Manhattan. His fourth illustrated steampunk novel, The Invention of Hugo Cabret (2007) – the story of the relationship between a kid and an automaton in 1930s Paris – earned him the Caldecott Medal in 2008. Among his other books, influenced by masters as Maurice Sendack and Remy Chiarlip: Wonderstruck (2011) and The Marvels (2015).
