paolo virzì
Considered one of the greatest heirs of the “Italian Comedy” tradition, Paolo Virzì made his directorial debut in 1994 with La bella vita (“The Beautiful Life”), a bitter reflection on the progressive loss of identity of the working class, which wins him a David di Donatello Award and a Silver Ribbon (Italian Film Critics Prize) as best new director. He follows up the success with August Vacation (1996), David di Donatello for Best Film, and Ovosodo (1997), a precise and ironic look at the youth of the time, winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. After Kisses and Hugs (1999) and My name is Tanino (2002), Virzì directs Caterina in the Big City (2003); Napoleon and Me (2006), a period film centered on Napoleon’s exile to Elba; Your Whole Life Ahead of You (2008), a tragicomedy set in a call center; The Man Who Hit His Head (2009), The First Beautiful Thing (2010); Every Blessed Day (2012); Human Capital (2013), winner of seven David di Donatello and six Silver Ribbon awards. In 2017 his Like Crazy (2016) wins five David di Donatello, including Best Film and Best Director, and five Silver Ribbons, including Best Film and Best Screenplay. This year he has directed The Leisure Seeker, a film based on the novel of the same name by Michael Zadoorian; the simple but extraordinary story of two eighty-year-olds who embark on a road trip in the streets of America seeking an unpredictable finale to their lives. Virzì is currently working on a new comedy entitled Notti magiche (“Magic Nights”).
