Novelist, poet, essayist and critic, Ben Lerner was born in Topeka, Kansas, in 1979 and currently teaches English Literature at Brooklyn College. First American to be awarded the prestigious Preis der Stadt Münster für Internationale Poesie in Germany, he has published three collections of poetry: The Lichtenberg Figures, 2004, Angle of Yaw, 2006, National Book Award finalist, and Mean Free Path, 2010. His first novel, Leaving the Atocha Station, 2011, won the 2012 Believer Book Award. His second, 10:04, was one of the literary cases of 2014. In 2015 Lerner won the MacArthur Genius Grant. In 2016 he published The Hatred of Poetry, an essay on emotional reactions to poetry, considered a starting point for a defense of the art world.
