He was born in 1949 in Seattle and his professional employment is exclusively in the publishing world. Until 1986 he worked at Random House, before moving to Ferrar, Straus & Giroux, where in 2002 he became President and Publisher. Over the years he has discovered numerous entries in the international literary scene, amongst which Geoffrey Eugenides, Jonathan Franzen, Jamaica Kincaid, Alice McDermott, Seamus Heaney, Mario Vargas Llosa, Michael Cunningham, Philip Roth and Roberto Saviano. As a scholar of Italian literature, he is a translator of poetic works by Eugenio Montale and Giacomo Leopardi. In 2012 he published a collection of poems Left-Handed. With Muse: A novel, recently published in the United States and also in Italy, he made his debut in fiction (June 2015).
