Warner Bros. and Brett Ratner’s RatPac Entertainment have closed a movie rights deal to Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Goldfinch.” Ratner has come on board as a producer, joining with “The Hunger Games” producer Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson through their Color Force banner. RatPac’s James Packer will exec produce.
The deal has been in the works for several weeks. The book was published last fall and has been on the New York Times bestseller list for 39 weeks.
The story, which takes place over two decades, follows a 13-year-old boy who loses his mother in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He survives the explosion, steals the Carel Fabritius painting the Goldfinch, gets taken in by an Upper East Side family and eventually reunites with his father, an alcoholic gambling addict who takes him to Las Vegas.
Courtenay Valenti and Racheline Benveniste will oversee for the studio.
RatPac signed a $300 million co-financing deal with the studio last fall under which it financed “Gravity” and then signed a first-look deal at Warners in April. It’s set up Harlan Coben’s “Missing You” at Warners and is developing a Hank Williams biopic independently with Tom Hiddleston starring.
Warner Bros. bought movie rights to Tartt’s first novel, muder mystery “The Secret History,” several yaers ago.
Tartt was represented in the deal by ICM Partners. The news was first reported by Deadline.
